Beating his fellow breakaway companions, Impey who lives nearby and is in SA for the summer, made use of the fast flat race to build on his form for SA champs in a few weeks time. David Maree of Team Telkom and Willie Smit of RoadCover Cycling Team rounded off the podium.

The event is traditionally a fast race. With perfect conditions on the day, it was raced at a high speed. An early escape group formed which included Brendon Davids (RoadCover), Myles Von Musschenbroek (Pro Touch), David Marree (Telkom) and Athol Johnson. They gained over 2 minutes lead before the big bunch entered the hillier part of the route.

Daryl Impey and Clint Hendricks started the attack which split the bunch, on the outskirts of the Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve. The group that formed was a good one, including the top favourites for the event, Nolan Hoffman, Clint Hendricks, Calvin Beneke, Willie Smit and more.

They soon crossed over to the breakaway group, speeding the final 40kms towards the finish. The bunch was in pursuit, and not far behind, but the impetus of Impey, Smit and the rest kept the tempo high.

Calvin Beneke of Team Telkom punctured from the breakaway group, upsetting the balance, and putting pressure on Telkom to chase from behind. The gap was only 30 secs for the final 30kms of the race.

It headed back toward the finish at Midvaal Raceway, Team Telkom in pursuit of the breakaway group, within sight, but still unreachable.

Into the final 10kms, and Myles Von Musschenbroek made an attempt for the win with an attack. Impey, Smit and Maree reacted. This small group made it to the finish with some freedom, while the rest of the breakaway was absorbed into the bunch.

Impey proved the fastest in the sprint, Maree and Smit second and third.

The bunch was led home in 5th place by Clint Hendricks of RoadCover, and last year’s winner, Nolan Hoffman in 6th.
